Volleyball: State College splits in invitational

Taylor Leath pounded 62 kills to pace the Lady Little Lions as they split 12 matches in the State College Invitational on Saturday.

State College went 3-3 in the morning pool to qualify for the gold pool later in the afternoon. The Lady Little Lions went 3-3 in the gold pool. Hempfield defeated Parkland 2-1 in the final over the event, which featured eight ranked teams among the 16 participants.

“I was really pleased after we made the afternoon gold pool,” State College coach Chad Weight said. “There were really a lot of good teams. Other than a few inconsistencies, we played pretty well.”

Christine Irwin added 27 kills and a team-high 22 digs. Kyla Irwin had 17 kills and a team-high 11 block, while Janae Moran dished out 81 assists. Leath added 20 digs and Sydney McNulty had six blocks.

The Lady Little Lions play at Central Dauphin East on Monday.

Hot stretch paces

State College

With two goals in the final five minutes of the first half, and another less than six minutes into the second half, State College got the best of Carlisle 4-1 Saturday afternoon at Memorial Field.

Robin Derr staked the Lady Little Lions to an early lead before the scoring flurry. Victoria Crawford began the run with 4:53 left before intermission, and after Sarah Reidy scored for the Thundering Herd with 1:17 left, Haley Crawford converted 42 seconds before the break. Megan Fry completed the scoring 5:53 into the second half.

Haley Crawford and Derr each had assists, and Caitlyn Fosnacht made one save in the win.

State College blanks foe

Ty Leway turned back 10 shots as State College netted a 3-0 victory over Carlisle on Saturday.

Will Edwards amd Tyler Wheeler scored goals for the Little Lions, while Robby Waite added an assist. The Little Lions’ other goal game when Carlisle booted the ball into its own goal on a shot by Wheeler.

finishes eighth

State College’s Tyrus Gates lost to Scranton Prep’s Nick Johnson on the third playoff hole on Saturday in the Hershey Invitational in a battle for the individual title.

Gates birdied three of his last four holes to shot a one-over 72 to lead the Little Lions (236) to an eighth-place finish in the 16-team field. Hershey and Cumberland Valley tied for the team crown with the host team winning on a tiebreaker.

Christian Friberg shot a 76 for the Little Lions, while Alex Stover and Matt Robert each had 88s.

Lady Little Lions come home third

Karli Nolan’s fifth-place finish with a 93 led State College to a third-place finish in the three-team Hershey Invitational on Saturday.

Hershey won with a 263 total. Cumberland Valley (291) was second and State College (295) was third. Hershey’s Sabrina Reilly won the individual title with a round of 85.
