UNIVERSITY PARK — The No. 8 Penn State women’s soccer team completed an 8-0 September record with a 4-1 romp over Indiana on Sunday at Jeffrey Field.
Raquel Rodriguez, Tani Costa, Emily Hurd and Maya Hayes each netted goals for the Nittany Lions.
Penn State (9-1-1 overall, 3-0 Big Ten) took the lead six minutes into the contest on Rodriguez’s third goal of the season.
The Hoosiers (8-2-1, 0-2) bounced back with a goal by Monica Melink at the 25-minute mark and the contest remained tied at the half.
“Indiana came in and they were flying,” Penn State coach Erica Walsh said. “They took it to us early on in the game and we weren’t prepared mentally. We talked a lot about effort at halftime and I thought the second half was much better on our part.”
Costa gave Penn State the lead for good coverting on Hurd’s second assist of the game at the 53:35 mark.
Less than six minutes later, Hurd scored a goal of her own, a shot from the corner of the 18-yard box.
“We kind of go as Emily goes,” Walsh said. “When she’s on, we are flying and she came out to play in the second half.”
Hayes capped the scoring with her 12th goal of the season, a shot form 12 yards off an assist from Taylor Schram.
Penn State keeper Britt Eckerstrom stopped eight shots.
The Nittany Lions next play at Wisconsin on Friday.
