The Save Colyer Lake group held a fundraiser Sept. 15 to show community support by filling the lake with kayaks, canoes and rowboats. More than 100 boats participated in the event, according to www.savecolyerlake.org.
The event also included outdoor-oriented workshops, local entertainment, mountain biking, road biking, hiking and refreshments.
The group hoped that the show of support could begin to raise money to restore Colyer Lake back to the recreation area used by many area residents.
Last year, the dam was deemed “highly hazardous” by the Fish and Boat Commission, and 17 feet of water was released. The lower water levels were considered safer, and the lake can be used this way until the dam is repaired. The cost of this repair is estimated at $6.8 million, but no state funds have yet been approved to do this work.
