Girls tennis: State College players fall in district singles semifinals

October 5, 2013

State College’s Cathy Badding and Juliette Greer won their opening matches with ease but fell in the semifinals at the District 6 Class AAA singles championships on Friday.

The pair combined to drop just one game in their opening matches at the Leopold Rec Center. Badding swept Altoona’s Marina Dixon 6-0, 6-0, while Greer stopped Lauren Bennett of Central Mountain 6-1, 6-0.

The district’s top seeds ended the runs, however, with Hollidaysburg’s Marissa Lanzel beating Badding 6-3, 6-1, and Altoona’s Lauren Lucas dropping Greer 6-4, 6-0.

“Juliette and Cathy represented State High with class today,” Lady Little Lions coach Jane Borden said. “They both played really well in their first matches but ran into much more experienced players in Lucas and Lanzel in their second matches. Our youth showed today but the girls learned a lot.”

Lanzel and Lucas will battle for the district title Saturday morning.

The district doubles tournament will be held next weekend back in Altoona, with Greer and Badding teaming up for a try at the title along with teammates Caitlin McGlaughlin and Elizabeth Easterling.
