Letter to the editor | The majority isn’t ruling

October 8, 2013

A subset of the Republican Party, by threat and by action, is subverting our democratic system by holding the normal appropriations process hostage and blackmailing Rep. John Boehner and the rest of the government in order to meet their demands.

The normal system works on majority rule; clearly that is not what is happening.

Let us get our definitions straight. Subversion is a systematic attempt to overthrow or undermine a government or political system by persons working within the system.

The verb blackmail is to force (someone) to do something by using threats.

We should consider whether this minority is committing illegal acts that could be subjected to criminal prosecution.

Letting this subversive process continue undermines democracy at its base. Are we really ready to give up our democracy for a bunch of billionaire Koch-brothers-supported, irrational tea party representatives who are ready to dictate which programs they will fund and to what degree from among the programs and obligations the whole government has already agreed to under normal processes?
