UNIVERSITY PARK — The preseason wrestling rankings are out and the defending champs sit perched atop the field.
Penn State will enter the 2013-14 season looking to capture its fourth straight Big Ten and NCAA championships and will do so from the top spot in InterMats Tournament Power Index with 100.5 points. Iowa is second with 99, followed by Minnesota (83), Oklahoma (70.5) and Oklahoma State (70.5).
The Nittany Lions have nine wrestlers ranked in the individual standings by InterMat, with David Taylor and Ed Ruth garnering No. 1 spots at 165 and 184 pounds, respectively.
Taylor is coming off a runner-up finish at 165 pounds, while Ruth won his second national title last March. Joining them are Nico Megaludis, who is No. 2 at 125 and also coming off a runner-up NCAA finish.
All-American 174-pounder Matt Brown is ranked No. 3 at 174 pounds. Twins Andrew and Dylan Alton are ranked Nos. 8 and 6 at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively, while Jimmy Gulibon is slotted at No. 11 at 133 pounds and Morgan McIntosh is No. 4 at 197 pounds. Gulibon and McIntosh are both coming off redshirt years.
Heavyweight Jimmy Lawson will start the season ranked 10th.
Taylor, Brown and Ruth will wrestle in the NWCA All-Star Classic on Nov. 2 at George Mason University.
