Boys golf: State College leads at District 6 tournament

— State College holds a nine-stroke lead after the first day of the District 6 Class AAA Boys’ Golf Championships on Tuesday.

The Little Lions posted a 319 team total with four scores counting from five golfers. Hollidaysburg is second at 328.

State College’s Ben Gellenberg is tied for second after shooting a 5-over 77 at Scotch Valley Country Club, matching the score of the Tigers’ Jesse Ottoway. Hollidaysburg’s Hunter Shields leads at 2-over 74.

The Little Lions’ Tyrus Gates is fourth with a 78, while Christian Friberg and Alex Stover each carded 82s.

The winning team will play Friday in a subregional at DuBois for a spot in the PIAA tournament. The top two individuals will compete in regionals at Toms Run in Blairsville on Oct. 16.

St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy’s Garrett Bastardi is in the hunt for a spot in the Class AA tournament after his opening-round 80 to tie for fifth.

Central Cambria’s Jeremy Eckenrode is two strokes ahead of Bastardi for the first-round lead, with 11 golfers within six strokes of the lead.
