Letter to the editor | A vote for Madrid

October 17, 2013

State College’s upcoming mayoral election is critical. Along with serving as ceremonial leader, the mayor must guide council in addressing the borough’s ordinance enforcement, development/redevelopment, financial stability, town/gown relations and other major issues.

Through leadership on the borough’s planning and historic resources commissions, as Holmes-Foster Neighborhood Association president, and in the Coalition of Neighborhood Associations, Ron Madrid has demonstrated a strong ability to keep discussions focused on topic while also ensuring that all viewpoints are heard.

Madrid’s understanding of current issues is outstanding. His ability to grasp new issues is both quick and thorough. He routinely considers both short- and long-term consequences of any action.

Open-mindedness is important to Madrid. He listens, and I’ve seen him change his mind upon hearing others’ perspectives.

Although a lifelong Democrat, I believe that local government should be nonpartisan. Because I’m eager for strong leadership in the borough, I shall vote for Ron Madrid for mayor, and encourage others to do the same.
