Letter to the editor | Tired of Thompson, Toomey

October 22, 2013

The 16-day government shutdown accomplished virtually nothing and came at the staggering cost of about $27 billion.

Yet our local representative, Glenn Thompson, R-Howard Township, was among those who waited until we were at the brink of default before voting to reopen the government.

And Sen. Pat Toomey was one of the handful of Republican senators who voted against ending the shutdown, apparently on the rationale that the reforms he would like to see are important enough to outweigh the risk of true financial disarray.

Yet they claim to stand for economic responsibility.

This is not representation; it is hooliganism, and I suspect that I am not the only person who is outraged at our representatives’ complicity in it.

We elected them to govern, not to sabotage the government. I would like to see them abandon their usual lip service, humbly and honestly acknowledge the anger of a significant number of constituents and offer an honest and rational explanation for their obstruction.
