Answer to question: The mayor’s primary responsibility is to be a team-builder and facilitator. The mayor must be able to articulate the challenges to our quality of life. Quality of life includes public safety, public services and the financial strength of the borough. Additionally, the mayor must encourage residents to participate in the governance of the borough and facilitate consensus among opposing parties. The strength of the mayor’s leadership and influence are major factors in bringing our diverse community together for a common purpose. As mayor, I shall work tirelessly to maintain the borough as a great place to live and work.

DEMOCRAT

Elizabeth A. Goreham, State College

Date of birth: Feb. 1, 1942

Education: B.A., political science, George Washington University, Washington, D.C.

Occupation: Mayor of State College

Qualifications: Mayor, State College, completing first four-year term; active member, Pennsylvania Municipal League; Borough Council member, three terms — two years council president; past member Council of Governments; past vice chair, CCMPO, which has countywide responsibility for transportation funding.

Answer to question: In addition to acting as presiding officer of Borough Council, the mayor, according to our charter, is “the ceremonial head and official representative” of our town.

In that role, the mayor represents the values, hopes, and aspirations of our entire community. I believe that an essential part of the mayor’s job is to be respectful to everyone and to be open to everyone’s ideas. Being mayor is deeply enjoyable and fulfilling to me. It is my great desire to continue in this role.
