Fire tears through Potter Township business; Scott's likely 'total loss'

— A massive blaze tore through a local business Sunday night, likely causing the total loss of the building.

The fire started in Scott’s Landscaping just off U.S. Route 322 at about 6:30 p.m. and when Centre Hall Fire Company arrived, the flames were already through the roof, chief Harry Hockenberry said.

He said the damage to the building was heavy, and it is unlikely it is salvageable.

“I’m going to assume it’s a total loss,” he said.

Other responders included Boalsburg, Alpha, Pleasant Gap and Milroy with Milesburg standing by. Hockenberry said they had a problem getting enough water and multiple tanker trucks had to be brought to the scene to continue battling the blaze.

No injuries were reported.

Another problem was the high winds that blew the heavy smoke and caused the fire to pick up steam.

“The wind was very terrible,” he said. “It was really feeding the fire.”

The wind also caused some nearby trees and leaves to catch fire, but those fires were quickly extinguished.

A smell of fuel wafted through the air, which Hockenberry said was caused by trucks inside the garage area that was ablaze. He said the fuel didn’t add much to the fire.

As a result of the fire, Route 322 was closed in both directions with teams directing traffic onto adjacent roads.

Hockenberry estimated that fire crews would be on site for more than five hours to completely put out the fire. He said late Sunday that the cause is undetermined.
