Norfolk, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - Aaron Bacote scored a game-high 21 points as the Old Dominion Monarchs claimed a 70-60 victory over the Murray State Racers in a non-league scuffle at the Constant Convocation Center.
Richard Ross nearly had a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds for Old Dominion (2-1). Keenan Palmore added 13 points, Dimitri Batten tacked on 11 while Denzell Taylor pulled in 12 rebounds.
Cameron Payne netted 17 points to lead Murray State (1-2). Jeffery Moss added 11 points and Dexter Fields and Jarvis Williams each had 10 points with Williams also registering 12 rebounds.
Murray State got out to a 36-29 lead at halftime by shooting 53.3 percent from the field. Despite hitting just 31 percent from the floor during the period, the Monarchs stayed close thanks to an 8-0 advantage from the free throw line.
The two teams reversed roles in the second half with the Monarchs pulling ahead and away behind a 51.6 percent effort from the field while the Racers lagged behind, netting 33.3 percent.
Old Dominion had twice as many offensive rebounds as Murray State (14-7) and subsequently outscored the Racers, 13-2, in second chance points.
