Letter to the editor | Don’t be bullied

November 19, 2013

I was dismayed to read that Warner Bros. is bullying communities over the use of the name “The Polar Express.”

Though they bought the film rights to the contents of the book and own the rights to the movie, a title alone cannot be copyrighted and, therefore, Warner Bros. does not own the name.

Schlow Centre Region Library’s 20-year use of the name “The Polar Express” for the book reading and downtown trolley ride may predate any involvement Warner Bros. had with optioning the book for a film.

Before the Downtown Improvement District and Schlow relinquish the event’s name, I recommend they consult a copyright attorney who can advise them about standing up to the Warner Bros. bully.
