Penn State men’s soccer: Nittany Lions to host NCAA contest

— For the 31st time in program history, the Penn State men’s soccer team is headed to the NCAA Tournament.

The Nittany Lions (11-5-2) will host St. Francis Brooklyn (12-5-1) in the opening round at 7 p.m. Thursday at Jeffrey Field.

Penn State captured the Big Ten regular-season title, but fell 5-3 on penalty kicks in the conference semifinals to eventual champion Indiana.

St. Francis Brooklyn was seeded fourth in the Northeast Conference Tournament, but upset top-seeded Central Connecticut State (2-0) and Bryant (3-2) to win the title and automatic NCAA berth.

Penn State is 25-29-1 in NCAA actions. The Nittany Lions are 3-1 against Northeast Conference teams.

The winner will play at UC Santa Barbara in the second round on Sunday.

Tickets for the Thursday’s contest go on sale Tuesday at the athletic ticket office in the Bryce Jordan Center. The cost is $8 for adults, $5 for students and youth and $3 for groups of 20 or more.
