Auburn, AL (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Denson scored 15 points as the Auburn Tigers downed the Jacksonville State Gamecocks, 78-54, at Auburn Arena.
Denson shot 5-of-11 from the field and brought down six rebounds for the Tigers (2-1). KT Harrell netted 14 points on 4-of-7 from the field and 5-of-5 from the free-throw line. Malcolm Canada added another 10 points for the hosts.
D.J. Felder posted a double-double for the Gamecocks (0-5) with 16 points and 12 rebounds. He was his team's only double-digit scorer.
The Gamecocks struggled offensively in the first half, shooting only 29.6 percent from the field. Meanwhile, the Tigers shot 48.1 percent and connected on 7-of-10 from the foul line, as they went into halftime with a comfortable 33-19 advantage.
While they shot an improved 40 percent in the second half, the Gamecocks were unable to get back in the game, as Auburn's lead swelled to as many as 31 points late in the contest.
The Gamecocks never led in the game and only managed to knock down half of their free-throw attempts (12-of-24). The Tigers outscored their opponent 44-24 in the paint and 26-12 on second chance opportunities, and they also grabbed 14 more rebounds in the lopsided affair.
