Auburn, AL (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Denson scored 17 points to lead the Auburn Tigers over the Tennessee State Tigers, 78-73, in non-conference action at Auburn Arena.
Tahj Shamsid-Deen added 16 points for Auburn (4-1), while KT Harrell finished with 14 points and Allen Payne scored 13.
For Tennessee State (0-7), Jacquan Nobles led all scorers with 22 points, while Kennedy Eubanks and Patrick Miller each chipped in with 17 points, the latter also dishing out eight assists.
Tennessee State shot 54.5 percent from the field in the first half, including 6-of-10 from 3-point distance. Despite shooting just 39.3 percent and missing all but one of its nine 3-point tries in the half, Auburn took a 36-33 lead into the break, in large part to 13-3 advantage at the free-throw line.
Both teams were hot in the second half, with Auburn connecting on 57.1 percent and Tennessee State shooting 58.3 percent from the field. Though Auburn led the entire half, TSU stayed within striking distance. Tennessee State was able to get within one possession several times in the final minutes, but Auburn made 8-of-10 free throws in the final 70 seconds to hold on for the victory.
Auburn made the most of its time at the charity stripe, hitting 30-of-37, compared to only 12-of-24 for the visitors.
