A traffic accident Tuesday morning on state Route 144 in Potter Township killed two people and closed the road for about three hours.

Centre County Chief Deputy Coroner Judy Pleskonko pronounced Roger Kennedy Jr., 25, of Lewistown, and Terry Bitner, 50, of Belleville, dead at the scene, Coroner Scott Sayers said.

State police said the crash near Tucker Road occurred at about 7 a.m. along a marked passing zone in heavy fog. According to Sayers, Kennedy was traveling north when he tried to pass a car and struck Bitner’s southbound vehicle head on.

The impact killed both motorists, who were driving alone, state police said.

Police closed the road in both directions between U.S. Route 322 in Potters Mills and state Route 45 in Old Fort while emergency personnel were on the scene and traffic was being diverted, according to the state Department of Transportation. The road was reopened about three hours later.

Sayers said autopsies were scheduled for Tuesday night and Wednesday.
