Recap: Vanderbilt vs. Marshall

Nashville, TN (SportsNetwork.com) - Damian Jones and James Siakam each poured in 15 points as the Vanderbilt Commodores held off the Marshall Thundering Herd, 69-67, in non-conference action at Memorial Gymnasium.

Jones shot 6-of-8 from the field and grabbed six rebounds for Vanderbilt (5-3), while Siakam was 9-of-11 from the free-throw line. Rod Odom chipped in 11 points for the hosts.

For Marshall (4-4), Kareem Canty led all scorers with 18 points, while Elijah Pittman (17 points) and Shawn Smith (15) weren't far behind.

Vanderbilt opened up a 35-26 lead at the half after outshooting Marshall from the field, 44.4 percent to 33.3 percent. It also outscored the Herd from the foul line in the opening 20 minutes, 8-4.

The Commodores extended their advantage to as many as 13 in the second half, but Marshall would not go away quietly. The Herd brought their deficit to one on three occasions, including with 2:06 left following a Canty 3-pointer, but Vanderbilt responded with a 3-pointer of its own at the 1:01 mark from Dai-Jon Parker to go back up by four. Marshall trailed by two in the waning seconds with possession, but Canty turned the ball over.

Vanderbilt was able to overcome a game-high 18 turnovers by outrebounding Marshall, 39-34.
