An inmate at the State Correctional Institution at Rockview was attacked and injured while playing chess this week at the facility, state police said.

Police said that the 39-year-old man, whom they did not identify, was sitting at a table concentrating on the game when he was approached from behind and cut with a sharp object.

Injuries to the man’s left ear and right side of his neck were considered severe and required treatment at Mount Nittany Medical Center.

Police said the attacker was an unknown inmate. They said an investigation into the attack will continue.
