Our View | Thumbs up for Friday

December 20, 2013

Thumbs up: To Ida Lively, declared the winner in the election to become mayor of Port Matilda. And also to Bobbi Jo Hamer, who finished a close second to Lively, 34 votes to 33, with the results of a recount announced. Both stepped forward and ran write-in campaigns on short notice.

Thumbs up: To the state Legislature and Gov. Corbett, for pushing through a series of bills aimed at protecting children from sexual assault and improving the system of advocates, caseworkers, police and first-reporters. Some of the measures grew out of the Jerry Sandusky scandal.

Thumbs up: To the Chamber of Business and Industry of Centre County, for its ambitious plans to grow private-sector revenue in the region by 2033. If successful, the chamber’s 3B33 initiative will add $3 billion to the economy, through entrepreneurship, job retention and networking.
