GAME NOTES: Former Colonial Athletic Association rivals collide this afternoon when the Old Dominion Monarchs take on the UNC-Wilmington Seahawks at Trask Coliseum.
Old Dominion has won seven of the last eight matchups in the series, including a 23-point victory in Norfolk last February. The lone win by the Seahawks in that stretch came last season, 65-60, on Jan. 16.
The Monarchs have been in free-fall mode, having lost six in a row. On Wednesday, Old Dominion suffered a 51-44 defeat at the hands of the College of Charleston. Aaron Bacote scored 13 points, while Dimitri Batten chipped in 10 points but on just 4-of-13 from the floor. ODU shot just 1-of-10 from beyond the arc and failed to get a single point from its bench. The Monarchs shot a season-low 31.4 percent from the floor.
Bacote (18.4 ppg), Batten (12.5 ppg) and Keenan Palmore (10.3 ppg) lead the charge for the Monarchs, who have been struggling all season offensively as they average 65 ppg. They're shooting just 57.1 percent from the free-throw line. Redshirt junior forward Richard Ross (8.8 ppg, 7.8 rpg) is a key contributor for a team that has struggled in perimeter shooting. ODU has made 31.5 percent of its 3-point shots, led by Bacote with his 23-of-52 effort.
The Seahawks had a two-game win streak snapped with a 77-72 home loss to Manhattan on Sunday. Cedrick Williams had 18 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks. Addison Spruill scored 15 points, while Freddie Jackson and Tanner Milson netted 11 points apiece.
Williams (14.3 ppg) and Spruill (13.2 ppg) pace the Seahawks in scoring. UNCW has outrebounded its opponents in four of the last five games. The big issue for UNCW has been shooting from long distance, as the Seahawks are making only 24 percent from 3-point range. Senior Tanner Milson is shooting 40.4 percent from beyond the arc, but the rest of the team is a combined 25-of-140 (.179) from downtown.
UNCW coach Buzz Peterson has faced difficult times when taking on Old Dominion. The Seahawks have averaged just 56,2 points against ODU in Peterson's five games on the bench. Expect a bit more scoring for the Seahawks today. They've scored at least 69 in each of the last three contests. The question though, is can the Seahawks overcome an ODU team that may lose its seventh straight game?
