Girls basketball: State College bounces back in big way, takes consolation game

From CDT staff reportsDecember 29, 2013

— The State College girls’ basketball team recovered from its first loss of the season to knock off Kennett 71-30 Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of the Kiwanis Holiday Classic.

The Lady Little Lions (7-1) fell 48-45 in overtime Friday night in their first-round game.

“It was a good bounce-back game from what we had, especially the night before,” coach Bethany Irwin said. “The night before was one of those games where you learn a lot and will help us down the road.”

Kyla Irwin’s 21 points, Bridget King’s 19 and Jalyn Shelton-Burleigh’s 16 paced State College. Shelton-Burleigh made 8 of 9 field goal attempts from the top of the lane.

“Kyla draws a lot of attention, and they were sagging their 2-3 or 3-2 zones and knew where Kyla was,” Bethany Irwin said of her daughter. “So Jalyn played well at the high post, and when they focused on her, we got it to Kyla down low. It was a great 1-2 punch. If both are clicking it can be fun to watch.”

Jessica Hussay’s nine points led Kennett.
