— Penn State officials will make a “major announcement” Saturday in what is widely expected to be the hiring of the university’s next football coach, James Franklin.

The announcement is set for a press conference at 4:15 p.m. from Beaver Stadium. Athletic Director Dave Joyner and President Rodney Erickson will reveal the announcement, the university said Friday.

The search for a new coach has narrowed in the last few days as Penn State’s six-member search committee has had Franklin, the coach at Vanderbilt University, in its sights.

A Penn State source on Thursday confirmed that Franklin had emerged as the leading candidate.

The search to find Bill O’Brien’s successor began last week, when O’Brien left to take the head coaching job with the Houston Texans.

The university trustees’ compensation committee will meet Saturday morning, which a source said was for the likely approval of the football coach’s contract.

Franklin met Friday with Vanderbilt officials, who had expressed their desire to keep the 41-year-old coach at the private Nashville, Tenn., school.
