Boys basketball: Bald Eagle Area downs Tyrone in double OT

From CDT staff reportsJanuary 11, 2014

— Bald Eagle Area overcame a sluggish first quarter and made a huge defensive switch in its 70-66 double-overtime boys’ basketball win over Tyrone on Friday night.

“We got off to a bad start,” BEA coach Bill Butterworth said. “I think we were down 15 points in the first quarter. (Brandon) Gripp just went off on us in the first half. We just settled down and got back into the game. My players all came up big somehow, some way tonight. One of the most exciting games I’ve been a part of.”

BEA scored a total of six points in the first quarter and was down 32-26 at the half.

Gripp scored 21 of his game-high 31 points in the first half, and his first-half performance forced Butterworth to make a change.

“We decided to go box-and-one and Jeffrey Bennett held Gripp to 10 points in the second half,” Butterworth said of the defensive switch. “‘Bubba’ got Gripp frustrated and forced a turnover with 30 seconds to go. They (Tyrone) got a flagrant foul and we made the free throws.”

Bennett had only seven points in the game but his defense paid dividends for the Eagles (9-1), who were without brothers Bryce and Bryan Green during the overtime periods after they each fouled out.

Brandon Gettig and Jason Jones led BEA with 18 points apiece and Ryan Dyke added 11 points. Gettig hit five 3-pointers.
