On Centre: Around Bellefonte | Bellefonte boys’ basketball program to raise money for American Cancer Society

As part of its yearly fundraiser, the Bellefonte boys’ basketball team is again looking to raise money for the American Cancer Society in its Coaches vs. Cancer game.

Athletic Director Deb Moore said the effort, which has been going on for several years, is part of a required charity effort for each sports team.

Each team organizes its own event as a collaboration between students and parents.

“It’s really kid-driven because they know, as part of being a team, they’re going to give something back,” Moore said.

This year’s Coaches vs. Cancer game is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday against Penns Valley in Bellefonte. Moore said they usually like to try to choose a game against a local team to extend the effort to a larger range of people in Centre County.

The event will include a silent auction, an ACS presentation and halftime activities with the B94.5 radio station.

Some members of the team also plan to speak on the radio that morning to promote the game.

Bellefonte will also sell T-shirts to raise additional money for the charity. They can be purchased at the day of the event or at the girls’ basketball games on Wednesday with the junior high game beginning at 4 p.m., junior varsity starting at 6 p.m., and the varsity tipping off at 7:30 p.m.

Other teams have organized efforts, such as setting up a booth at the Bellefonte Arts and Crafts Fair, volunteering at the FaithCentre or organizing food drives.

Moore said it’s a good way to give back to the community, and each team has a choice of what to do.
