Frigid temps affect schools, library; wind chill advisory in place

From CDT staff reportsJanuary 28, 2014

Centre County went from one wind chill advisory to another.

The National Weather Service in State College again declared a wind chill advisory, from Tuesday night to 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Wind chills are expected at 15 to 20 degrees below zero overnight into the morning hours, according to NWS.

Bald Eagle Area, Bellefonte Area, Philipsburg-Osceola Area and State College Area school districts all announced two-hour delays for Wednesday. Young Scholars of Central Pennsylvania Charter School and South Hills School of Business and Technology also are on two-hour delays.

The cold weather Tuesday morning forced a handful of schools to open late or close altogether, as the wind chill dropped temperatures down into negative numbers.

The temperature Tuesday morning was minus 2 at the Walker Building on Penn State’s campus, said meteorologist Jon Nese.

Schlow Centre Region Library was forced to close Tuesday because a breaker switch blew on the HVAC system, cutting off the heat, library Director Cathi Alloway said.

Alloway said the maintenance issues have been fixed, and the library is expected to reopen at 9 a.m. Wednesday.

“It was enough to close the library and we want to keep everyone safe,” she said.

Alloway added that she has contacted social service agencies that provide shelter to homeless.

Wednesday’s high is expected at 15 degrees, with an overnight low of 6, according to AccuWeather. Temperatures are expected to warm to above freezing over the weekend.
