From CDT staff reportsJanuary 29, 2014

A 28-year-old man involved in a hit-and-run crash in Millheim fled from police and falsely reported his vehicle stolen, state police at Rockview said.

Police said phone records and witness reports confirmed that Derek Leroy Auman was the driver of the 2006 Dodge Charger at the time of the crash before reporting it stolen. The incident occurred between 10 p.m. on Jan. 10 and 4 a.m. on Jan. 11.

Auman also filed a false claim through Erie Insurance, saying his car had been stolen at the time of the accident, police said.

He was charged with false reports to law enforcement, fleeing and eluding, insurance fraud, hit and run and multiple summary offenses. He was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Allen Sinclair, who set bail at $5,000.

He was taken to Centre County Correctional Facility after being unable to post bail, and a preliminary hearing has been set for Feb. 12.
