UNIVERSITY PARK — Ricky Rahne has worked with a handful of talented quarterbacks during his 10 years in coaching.
So far, former Kasas State signal-caller Josh Freeman and Vanderbilt standout Austyn Carta-Samuels have topped the lists of players hes worked with.
Rahne hasnt yet worked with a player whos had big a breakout season as a freshman, as Penn States Christian Hackenberg did in 2013.
Rahne said he recruited Hackenberg while Rahne was at Vanderbilt and has seen enough to know that he has a special player to mentor.
I think him and I will have a great relationship with each other and Im looking forward to working with him, Rahne said. Ive seen him a little bit on tape and a little bit on TV and things like that. Obviously hes extremely talented. Ive seen his high school tape.
I know he was well-coached last year, which is always a leg up.
Rahne, who is also listed as the teams passing game coordinator, will work with offensive coordinator John Donovan, who served as Vanderbilts play-caller over the last three seasons.
Some things will likely be different from what Hackenberg grew used to in Bill OBriens system, Donovan said. Other things will be similar, including the use of multiple tight-end sets.
We have elements of no-huddle, but we're a huddle team, Donovan said. But we like to dictate to the defense as far as disguising and getting into different looks and making them guess and keeping them on their heels.
Tight ends gives you the ability to do that. So I'm looking forward to having a great group there and see what we've got.
