Community Help Centre gets fresh start in new home

— Those in need have long had a place to turn to in the Community Help Centre.

But now they might need new directions to get there.

The volunteer-based, nonprofit organization that seeks to provide services, resources, education and training to those in need has moved from its South Allen Street location to a new home several blocks away.

From its new location on Fraser Street, the help center offers all of the same services, said Gayle Beese, program coordinator.

“We’re still unpacking and getting settled in,” Beese said last week. “But the phones are up and running, and people are welcome to come in.”

The organization has a drop-in center and 24-hour hotline to help those in need. The drop-in center offers short-term emotional support and referral services. An emergency food pantry is also located at the site.

The center’s new location, in a house at 410 S. Fraser St., offers a more homey environment, Beese said.

“It’s still clearly an office,” she said. “But now it’s more comfortable. I think it’s more welcoming and inviting for the clients. It better suits us.”

Beese said the center had extra space in its old location in an office building.

The center had originally been sharing space in the building, but when the other organization left, officials with the center looked to downsize.

“The move went well, it was a little chaotic with the phones,” Beese said. “The volunteers were great, everyone came and helped out and did what they could.”
