UNIVERSITY PARK — Penn State earned its fifth straight team title and won its Big Ten opener as the No. 7 Nittany Lions edged No. 5 Illinois 436.050 to 431.150 Saturday evening at Rec Hall.
Trevor Howard had one event win with a 15.100 on the parallel bars while finishing second in the all-around with an 86.650 total. The Illini’s CJ Maestas had the top all-around score of 87.050.
The Nittany Lions finished with the top team totals in all six rotations.
Preston Gall tied for first on the pommel horse with a 14.800, Tristan Duverglass had the top score on the vault with a 15.350 and Nestor Rodriguez posted a 15.000 for the top score on the high bar.
Howard and Craig Hernandez next compete at the Winter Cup in Las Vegas on Feb. 28.
