UNIVERSITY PARK — Freshman midfielder Abby Smucker and sophomore midfielder Madison Cyr led Penn State with a pair of goals each, but the No. 8 Penn State women’s lacrosse team fell to No. 3 Maryland, 14-7, at the Penn State Lacrosse Field Saturday afternoon.
After Maryland (4-0, 0-0 ACC) jumped out to a 5-0 lead, the Nittany Lions (1-1, 0-0 ALC) made it a three-goal deficit midway through the first half while fighting to within four goals on three other occasions.
Senior Mackenzie Cyr added a two-point contest (goal, assist), while junior Kelly Lechner and sophomore Jenna Mosketti also scored.
The Nittany Lions out-shot Maryland by a 36-31 margin and held a 12-4 caused-turnover advantage. The Terrapins won 12 of 22 draw controls and went 2-for-4 on free-position shots.
Freshman goalkeeper Cat Rainone made three saves in the opening half, while sophomore Emi Smith turned aside 10 shots in relief.
