Penn State softball: Nittany Lions fall to No. 5 Kentucky, Florida Atlantic

— Penn State suffered its fifth consecutive loss as the Nittany Lions fell 8-1 to No. 5 Kentucky and 3-2 against Florida Atlantic on Sunday.

After two scoreless frames, Kentucky (13-2) took control with five runs on five hits in the bottom of the third against freshman Marlaina Laubach. Emily Jolly plated the first two runs by crashing a two-run homer. Lauren Cumbess capped the inning with a two-run double that chased Laubach.

Shelby Miller’s RBI single in the sixth inning provided Penn State’s lone run. Miller had two singles for the Nittany Lions, who were outhit 13-4. Cumbess had three hits and drove in three for Kentucky.

The Lady Lions fell to Florida Atlantic in a clash which was postponed by a storm in the top of the seventh inning on Saturday. Penn State did not get a baserunner in its final at-bat on Sunday.

Florida Atlantic scored three in the third to take the lead. Lexi Knief’s two-run double in the fifth provided Penn State’s lone runs.

Knief had three of the Nittany Lions’ seven hits. Macy Jones pitched 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief of Marissa Diescher (1-3).

Penn State next plays at the James Madison Invitational on Saturday.
