Penns Valley Area School District kindergarten and pre-K registration is coming up, and the district is aiming to get children and their parents ready.
Assistant Superintendent Sherri Connell said the district holds programs that take families through a series of activities to determine a child’s readiness and provides recommendations and information on busing, reading and other concerns.
Connell expects about 100 kindergartners to enroll this year in its three elementary schools, Miles Township, Penns Valley and Centre Hall.
The kindergarten day starts at 8:15 a.m. and ends at 2:45 p.m., she said.
“It’s a long day for these kids, and parents may have concerns with who they’re leaving their child with all day,” Connell said. “We can answer any questions the kids and parents might have to alleviate any of those concerns.”
For the second year, the district is hosting a program called “Literacy Night,” which is offered five times throughout the year for kindergartners and their families.
Connell said the program is run by teachers in the district and offers reading activities and lessons on how to walk in line with classmates and other things kindergartners can expect once they enter school.
The event will be held 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Penns Valley Elementary on March 25, April 29 and June 3.
Two additional classes will be held after the school year starts in the fall.
“If a child might not be quite ready, we have a pre-k program we encourage they go into for a year,” Connell said. “We want to make sure they enter school when they are ready and can be successful.”
The Penns Valley pre-K is offered by the district in partnership with Cen-Clear Child Services and accepts about 20 students annually into the full-day program at Miles Township Elementary.
Pre-K registration will be held March 7 by appointment only.
To be eligible for pre-K, children must be 4 years old on or before Aug. 31. Call Deb Stover at 422-2000, ext. 2532.
Registration will be held at the Penns Valley Elementary/Intermediate School.
Kindergarten registration is April 15-17. No make-up dates are scheduled. If families cannot make it to registration, they can call the school district at 422-2000.
