Recap: NY Yankees vs. Pittsburgh

Tampa, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Derek Jeter made his Grapefruit League debut Wednesday, going 0-for-2, and the New York Yankees lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-2 at Steinbrenner Field.

Gregory Polanco homered and Mel Rojas blasted a three-run shot for the Pirates, who beat the Yankees on consecutive days to open their spring schedule. Matt Hague added two RBI for Pittsburgh, which used a five-run eighth to break the game open.

Kelly Johnson, starting a third base, doubled and drove in a run for the Yankees, who got two innings of two-hit, one-run ball from starting pitcher David Phelps. He struck out four.

Charlie Morton started for the Pirates and tossed two hitless innings, walking one and striking out one.

Jeter sat out the Yankees' Grapefruit League opener on Wednesday, a 6-5 loss to the Pirates. He announced earlier in spring training that he will retire at the end of the season.
