STATE COLLEGE — Peter Mooradian spent a few hours Friday morning helping Schlow Centre Region Library staff with tasks they usually don’t have time to address.
With trash bags in hand, he dusted the book shelves, threw away any trash people left on the library tables and organized books that were out of place.
“I like being involved in the community and with the library,” Mooradian said. “I think it’s nice to give back to a place like the library that offers so many services to the public.”
Mooradian’s efforts were part of the larger annual State Day of Service, which allows Penn State students to give their time to local organizations that might need an extra hand.
The event started Friday and runs through Monday, and it will come up again throughout March and April.
Penn State service leaders on the Council of LionHearts, in partnership with the Interfraternity Council and the Panhellenic Council, came up with the event to provide students with an alternative to drinking during State Patty’s Day and to make a positive contribution in the surrounding community.
State Patty’s Day is a student-organized drinking event created in 2007 as an alternative to St. Patrick’s Day, which sometimes occurs over spring break.
In its fourth year, State Day of Service comprises more than 25 different service opportunities, according to information from the university.
More than 150 volunteers will help out this weekend.
“It’s much appreciated,” said D.J. Lilly, library office manager. “We appreciate the input and getting extra help with something we can’t get to.”
Six students during two, two-hour shifts helped the library with some odds-and-ends.
Mooradian, a Penn State freshman, said he heard of the event through the student union and wanted to make the most of his time.
On Saturday, he said, he would be downtown with a group of people dusting the streets and picking up trash.
“When you have time to help, you just do it,” he said. “I look forward to what’s planned next year.”
