On Centre: Around Bellefonte | Borough looking to fill vacant treasurer position

Bellefonte is looking to hire a treasurer to work four to five hours a month, Borough Manager Ralph Stewart said.

The position has been vacant since last month after former treasurer Kay Zinsner died. The Borough Council wants to appoint someone with an accounting background like Zinsner, who also worked as a certified public accountant, Stewart said.

The crux of the position includes double-checking borough finances from its various accounts such as the water, sewer and general funds.

“The treasurer, in our case, typically reconciles the bank statements of the various funds we have,” Stewart said.

It comes with a flat stipend of $125 per month, and most of the work can be done remotely, he said. The job doesn’t require much time in the office.

He said the council wants to move quickly to fill the position, but there has been no formal deadline for applications. Interested applicants can submit their resume, addressed to the council, at the borough building, 236 W. Lamb St.

The person doesn’t have to live in Bellefonte, but Stewart said it’s preferred.

After all the applications are submitted, the council likely will interview some or all of the candidates before making the appointment.

Bellefonte also employs a financial director, so the duties for its treasurer are less than some other municipalities, Stewart said.

In the meantime, the work will be done by Assistant Treasurer Paul Badger. Stewart said Badger doesn’t have an interest in taking over the treasurer’s role.
