On Centre: Around Philipsburg | Soup’s on for arts center fundraiser

lfalce@centredaily.comMarch 5, 2014

Sometimes, you just need a bowl of hot soup.

Whether you are looking to warm your stomach or your soul, there is something about soup that is nourishing on lots of levels.

Front and Centre Productions is banking on people looking to get in touch with their inner Campbell’s Kid with an upcoming fundraiser. The event will bring soup makers and soup lovers together to experience a warm bowl of helping out a good cause.

All proceeds from the Souper Bowl Cook-off will go toward the creation of the Jack Weaver Center for Visual and Performing Arts in downtown Philipsburg.

Individuals or groups can enter their best soup (or soups) for tasting and judging. Registration is $25 per soup, with a March 19 deadline. Each entry requires about 5-7 gallons of soup to be served at the festivities from 1-4 p.m. April 5 at Gethsemane United Methodist Church in Allport.

There isn’t a limit to the soups you can enter.

Grandma’s chicken noodle? Bring it on.

Fresh garden veggie? Awesome.

French onion with ooey-gooey cheese? Get on with your bad self.

If you can cook it up, it’s welcome.

Prizes will be given for the best cream soup and best noodle soup, $30 each. People’s choice will net $50, and the best overall will get $75.

But because this is all for an arts group, they are also offering a prize for dramatic flair. The best visual representation of the event’s theme, “The Arts Make a Difference,” in their serving table decor will also take home $30.

Front and Centre began raising money for the arts center last fall. To date, they have raised more than $7,000 of their $25,000 goal.
