Our view | Thumbs up, down

March 6, 2014

Thumbs up: To the accomplishments of Ellen Perry, a former Penn State administrator who died Tuesday. Perry, the school’s first women’s swimming and diving coach, was a driving force in building women’s athletics at the university from 1989 to her retirement in 2002.

Thumbs down: To the state Department of Environmental Protection for approving a plan to use treated sewage sludge to help rehabilitate former mining land in a source water protection zone. DEP deems the project safe, but locals are worried about their drinking water.

Thumbs up: To Bellefonte Borough Council for adding more time for public comments during meetings so residents can weigh in on discussions, and for drafting a code of conduct for council members. Both ultimately better serve the public.
