Campus Corner: State College’s Scholly helps Juniata win ECAC region tourney

After helping Juniata to the ECAC Division III Southwest Tournament championship, State College graduate Brian Scholly was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

Scholly scored 24 points, including draining six shots from 3-point range, to lift the Eagles past second-seeded Hood College 82-67 Sunday. Juniata (18-12) was the No. 4 seed.

Scholly also scored 18 points in a 78-59 win over top-seeded and tournament host Bethany, W.Va., in the semifinals Saturday.

For the season he averaged 14.1 points and had 153 rebounds, 53 assists, 14 steals and seven blocked shots.


Mitchell Port (Bellefonte, Edinboro) improved to 26-0 for the season by winning his second EWL title at 141 pounds. Teammate AJ Schopp of Tyrone, won the 133 title for the third time and upped his record to 31-1. Port is ranked No. 1 at 141 and Schopp is No. 2 at 133. Both qualified for the NCAA Championships, which will be held March 20-22 in Oklahoma City’s Chesapeake Energy Arena. The tournament seeds will be announced Wednesday.


Kate McDonald (State College, Juniata) was named the Landmark Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year for the second time and Player of the Year for the third time. She averaged 15.7 points per game and had 277 rebounds, 95 assists, 94 steals, and 24 blocks.

Dennis Fisher (Bald Eagle Area, Juniata) averaged 1.7 points per game and had 24 rebounds, eight assists, two steals and seven blocked shots.

Taylor Allison (State College, St. Francis) averages 0.9 points per game. She has nine rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block. St. Francis is 14-16 after beating Sacred Heart 132-124 in double overtgime in the Northeast Conference quarterfinals. St. Francis will meet Mount St. Marys on Wednesday in a semifinal game.

Mary Pillot (BEA, PSU-DuBois) set the school record for 3-point shots, making 56. The previous record was 54. She averaged 10.9 points per game as a freshman.


Seth Tressler (Bellefonte, Mansfield) is hitting .240 with five runs scored, six hits, a double, and four RBIs. Mansfield is 5-2.

Justin Taylor (BEA, California of Pa.) is hitting .286 with a pair of hits, a double and an RBI. On the mound he is 1-1 with a 3.21 ERA. In 14 innings he has allowed 10 hits, five runs, all earned, five walks and seven strikeouts. Cal is 3-4.

Brandon Myers (Philipsburg-Osceola, Slippery Rock) is hitting .333 with a double and three RBIs. Slippery Rock is 5-4.

Luke Curtis (P-O, Pitt) is 0-0 with a 9.0 ERA. In one inning he has allowed on hit, one run (earned) walked one and struck out two. Pitt is 5-7.

Drew Bryan (P-O, VMI) is hitting .375 with four runs scored, three hits, and a double. VMI is 9-5.

Austin Mock (State College, IUP) is hitting .200 with two runs scored, four hits, two doubles and an RBI.

Clint Hicks (State College, PSU-Harrisburg) has a 12.96 ERA and an 0-2 record. In 8 1/3 innings he has allowed 17 hits, 16 runs, 12 earned, walked four and struck out four. Harrisburg is 0-2.

Matt Fry (State College, Washington & Jefferson) is hitting .333 with a hit. W&J is 2-1.

Parker Watson (P-O, Lock Haven) has an 11.57 ERA and is 1-0. In seven innings he has given up 11 hits and nine runs, all earned, while walking two and striking out six. Lock Haven is 6-2.

Mike Marcinko (P-O, Shippensburg) has a .433 average with three runs scored, 13 hits and three RBIs. Shippensburg is 7-3.

Mark Curtis (P-O, Shippensburg) is 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA. In 10 innings he has given up nine hits and five runs, four earned, while walking six and striking out 16.

Jason Costa (State College, Walters State) is 3-for-11 (.273) with a double and two runs scored.. Walters is 19-5.

Jared Dailey (State College, PSU-Altoona) is hitting .050 with two runs scored, a hit and an RBI. Altoona is 1-5.

Jordan Swope (State College, PSU-Altoona) is hitting .278 with two runs scored and five hits.

Saige Jenco (State College, Virginia Tech) is hitting .289 with five RBIs, a .518 on-base percentage and is 9 for 11 in stolen bases while starting all of the Hokies’ 13 games this season. Virginia Tech is 6-7.


Erica Pooler (Bellefonte, Lock Haven) is hitting .261 with a run scored, six hits, three doubles and five RBIs. LHU is 4-6.

Jasa Mitchell (BEA, IUP) is hitting .375 with three runs scored, six hits, a triple, a homer and five RBIs. IUP is 2-2.

Lily Glunt (BEA, PSU-Altoona) has a .364 average with four scored, four hits and four RBIs for PSU-Altoona, which is 3-1 after two wins on Monday in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Brittany Smith (Bellefonte, PSU-Altoona) is hitting .364 with four hit and three runs.

Kelly Chambers (BEA, PSU-Altoona) is hitting .400 with six runs scored, six hits, two doubles, a home run and three RBIs.

Cassondra Ross (BEA, PSU-Altoona) is hitting .667 with two hits in three at-bats. She also has a 0-0 record with a 7.71 ERA, allowing three hits, four runs, all earned and five walks with one strikeout.

Raychel DeArmitt (Bellefonte, PSU-Altoona) is batting .500 with four hits, a tripe and four RBIs. She also has a 3-0 record in the circle with a 3.94 ERA, allowing 21 hits, nine runs, seven earned and eight walks with 13 strikeouts.

Clarissa Keller (Penns Valley, PSU-Altoona) is hitting .625 with five runs, five hits, a double and five RBIs.

Alli Simpson (BEA, PSU-Altoona) is hitting .333 with a run and two hits.

Kate Burge (P-O, PSU-Altoona) is 0-1 with a 1.42 ERA. In 6 1/3 innings she has allowed six hits, an earned run, walked three and struck out five.

Chelsey Poorman (BEA, Lycoming) is hitting .154 with two runs scored, two hits and an RBI. Lycoming is 5-2.

Tess Deardorff (Penns Valley, Lebanon Valley) is hitting.381 with nine runs scored, eight hits, a double, an RBI and is 6-for-6 in steal attempts.

Kate Deardorff (Penns Valley, Lebanon Valley) is hitting .455 with three runs scored, 10 hits, an RBI and is 5-for-7 in stolen bases. Lebanon Valley is 7-0.

Morgan Coble (P-O, Shenandoah) is hitting .143 with a run, two hits, and an RBI. Shenandoah is 1-4.

Taylor Parsons (BEA, St. Francis) has a .217 average with five runs scored, five hits, a triple, a homer and six RBIs. St. Francis is 6-2.

Chelsea Rex (P-O, St. Francis) is taking a red-shirt season.

Hannah Cooper (Bellefonte, Central Connecticut State) is batting .250 with an on-base percentage of .318, posting one run, five hits, a double and an RBI.


Andy Jameson (State College, Eastern) has three goals and three assists. Eastern is 4-1.

Kayla Weaver (State College, Shippensburg) has started two games as a midfielder. Shippensburg is 2-0.

Katie Mahon (State College, Marquette) is on the roster as a freshman midfielder for the Golden Eagles.

Paul Crowe (State College, Susquehanna) was named to the Landmark Conference second team for both the 3,000 and 5,000 meters.
