Philipsburg-Osceola Area School District to sell two buildings

— Philipsburg-Osceola took steps to unload two buildings on Tuesday.

The board approved a contract with auctioneer Ronald Gilligan to sell both the Wallaceton-Boggs Elementary School in Wallaceton and the Philipsburg-Osceola Area Junior High building on Sixth Street in Philipsburg. The auctioneer would take a 5 percent commission on the sale of the structures.

The last school building sold by the district was the former Philipsburg Elementary on Ninth Street more than eight years ago. Wallaceton-Boggs has been closed for several years with children redistricted into the district’s other elementary schools. The junior high closed at the end of the 2012-13 school year and was replaced by the newly completed P-O Middle School.

Gilligan was also contracted to sell the contents of the junior high at a commission of 16 percent. He previously auctioned the contents of Wallaceton-Boggs. That sale in August netted the district $24,500 after the auctioneer’s fees and costs.

Previous auctions and sales of district property have actually cost the district money, officials have told the board in the past.
