Penn State softball: Nittany Lions drop games to Rutgers, Central Connecticut

— Central Connecticut State broke open a scoreless game with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Penn State fell 1-0 in the second game of a doubleheader on Friday.

The Nittany Lions (5-13) dropped a 4-3 decision to Rutgers in the opener.

Penn State’s Marlaina Laubach and Central Connecticut’s Laura Messina hooked up in a pitcher’s duel in the second game.

In the bottom of the sixth, Kenya McVey led off with a single, advanced to second on a groundout and to third on a single. She scored the game-winner on Arielle Bruno’s groundout to second base.

Messina (6-1 with a 0.54 ERA) made the run hold up. She finished with a four-hitter with six strikeouts and a walk.

Former Bellefonte High School standout Hannah Cooper had a single for the Blue Devils (6-3).

Laubach (4-5) allowed seven hits, walked five and struck out five.

In the opener, the Nittany Lions led 2-1 entering the bottom of the fifth, but the Scarlet Knights took the lead on Loren Williams’ two-run homer off Macy Jones.

Trailing 4-2 in the seventh, the Nittany Lions cut the deficit in half on Karlie Habitz’s RBI double. Jones then struck out to end the game.

Jones (0-4) allowed just five hits, walked three and struck out two. Lexi Knief, who scored all three Penn State runs, and Kasie Hatfield had two hits each.
