Penn State softball: Nittany Lions mauled by No. 12 Baylor

March 16, 2014

— The Penn State women’s softball team closed its spring break trip to Florida with an 8-1 loss to No. 12 Baylor on Sunday in the Michele Smith Spring Break Tournament.

Freshman Shelby Miller was 2 for 3 with her first collegiate double, while Lexi Knief tripled to lead off the game and scored the Nittany Lions’ only run on a Karlie Habitz ground out. Knief has three triples on the season.

Penn State (6-15), which has dropped 11 of its last 12 games, had a tough time with Bears pitcher Heather Stearns (9-1), who struck out nine and allowed five hits and no walks in the complete-game win.

Marissa Diescher took the loss in pitching just the first two innings as Baylor (22-4) racked up 12 hits and took advantage of three Penn State errors. Kaitlyn Thumann led the Bears’ offense with a 4 for 4 day including a double, while Ari Hawkins had a triple and single with two RBIs and Holly Holl had a double and single.

The Nittany Lions are back on the field Friday for their home- and Big Ten-opener against Purdue for a three-game weekend series at Nittany Lion Softball Park.
