High school wrestling: Penn State recruits shine at Dapper Dan

— Three Penn State wrestling recruits went unbeaten to highlight action at the annual Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic on Sunday as Team USA defeated Pennsylvania 25-16 at Fitzgerald Fieldhouse at the University of Pittsburgh.

At 170 pounds, three-time Texas champion Bo Nickal scored a 14-9 triumph over PIAA Class AA 182-pound champ Stephen Loiseau. Nickal, ranked second nationally with a 179-7 record, had a 5-1 edge in takedowns over Louiseua (154-26), who is headed to Drexel.

Three-time California champion Nick Nevills topped four-time PIAA champ Thomas Haines 5-3 in a battle of the nation’s top two heavyweights. Nevills (200-5), had two takedowns against Haines (174-5), who had orally committed to Penn State but opted to head to Ohio State after the Nittany Lions landed Nevills.

Three-time PIAA champion Jason Nolf (176-1) avenged an offseason loss to Oregon’s Tyler Berger (198-3) with an 8-5 win at 145. Nolf, of Kittaning, had three takedowns and a reversal against Berger, a Nebraska recruit, in the final match of the night

Other Pennsylvania winners were: Parkland’s Ethan Lizak (2-1 at 113), Latrobe’s Zack Zavatshy (3-1 in sudden victory at 182), Central Dauphin’s Garrett Peppleman (4-3 at 160) and Canon-McMillan’s Dalton Macri (9-0 at 120).

Other Team USA winners were: Bryce Brill (5-1 at 152), Josh Alber (3-2 at 132), Kyle Snyder (10-2 at 220), Chip Ness (12-9 at 195) and Joe McKenna (3-1 at 138).
