Lauryn Hill to perform ‘rare’ show at Bryce Jordan Center

From CDT staff reportsMarch 18, 2014

Lauryn Hill, a former member of the hip-hop group The Fugees, will perform at the Bryce Jordan Center on May 4.

The Bryce Jordan Center recently announced a performance at Penn State by the “mother of hip hop” Lauryn Hill.

The former member of the Fugees continued to establish herself as creative force with her 1998 solo debut “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.” She also is known for breaking new ground by integrating rap, soul, reggae and R&B into her own sound.

Hill wrote, arranged or produced almost every track on “Miseducation,” which is steeped in Motown-esque doo wop and lyrical soul, and the album took home five Grammy Awards in 1999, including for album of the year, best new artist, best female R&B vocal performance, best R&B song and best R&B album; the most ever for a woman. Shortly after, she launched a highly praised national tour with Atlanta rap group Outkast.

In 2012, the soul singer was charged with three counts of tax evasion for not paying federal taxes; she served three months and was released in October. In addition to the Penn State appearance, Hill will perform this summer at Bonnaroo, the Electric Forest Festival and FloydFest. In a news release, the Bryce Jordan Center called her May 4 concert “rare” and “a pleasant surprise for her fans in the Northeast.”

Tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. March 21 at the BJC, Eisenhower Auditorium and the Penn State Downtown Theatre Center; online at; or by phone at 800-745-3000. Visit for more information.
