Dayton, OH ( - Iowa head men's basketball coach Fran McCaffery will be with his team when the Hawkeyes take on Tennessee in Wednesday's NCAA Tournament First Four contest in Dayton.

McCaffery was able to fly back to southwestern Ohio to join his team only hours after being with his 13-year-old son, Patrick, who underwent surgery to remove a tumor from his thyroid earlier in the day in Iowa.

"Today's surgery for my son Patrick went as planned," McCaffery said in a statement released by the university. "Doctors will continue tests in the coming days to determine further treatment. Patrick was in good spirits after the operation. Our family would like to thank the surgeons who performed the operation and the doctors and nurses at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics who have helped treat Patrick during this process."

McCaffery has led the Hawkeyes to a 20-12 record this season, good enough to send the program to the NCAA's for the first time since 2006.

The 54-year-old has gone 74-62 overall with a 30-42 mark in the Big Ten for Iowa, and has led the Hawkeyes to three straight postseason berths.
