Penn State softball: Boilermakers crush Nittany Lions

— Purdue completed a three-game drubbing of Penn State with a 9-2 and 13-4 doubleheader sweep on Saturday at Nittany Lion Softball Park.

The Boilermakers (16-16 overall, 3-0 Big Ten) smacked 35 hits in the three-game series.

In Saturday’s opener, Tori Chiodo smacked a three-run homer and Danielle Fletcher added a solo shot for Purdue. Karlie Habitz had a solo homer and Lexi Knief had two hits and an RBI for Penn State.

In the nightcap, Penn State (6-16, 0-3) closed to within 6-4 to after four innings, but the Boilermakers erupted for seven runs in the fifth and ended it there. Andie Varsho’s two-run double and Ashley Burkhardt’s two-run single preceded Fletcher’s three-run bomb over the scoreboard in left field.

Varsho, with three doubles, and Fletcher, who homered, along with Burkhart and Maia Monchek had three hits each for the Boilermakers. Kasie Hatfield had two hits and drove in two runs for Penn State.

Penn State next hosts Michigan on Friday.
