Penn State baseball: Nittany Lions open Big Ten slate with a victory over Northwestern

— The Nittany Lions opened their conference season with a 7-3 win over Northwestern win inside Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Friday.

Penn State (11-13, 1-0) fell behind Northwestern (4-18, 1-3) early after the Wildcats put two runners on and got a two-run double from Jack Livingston. But the Nittany Lions rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth.

J.J. White and Greg Guers notched back-to-back hits to start Penn State’s frame before Tyler Kendall plated White with a groundout. James Coates followed with a double that brought Guers around to score.

Penn State picked up another run in the fifth and catcher Alex Malinsky knocked in the game-winning RBI in a four-run sixth.

Ian Parvin (2-1) picked up the win for Penn State in 4 1/3 innings of work in which he gave up two hits and two walks with a strikeout. T.J. Jann started for the Nittany Lions and worked 4 2/3 innings. He gave up three runs on eight hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

The two teams play again at 10 a.m. Saturday.
