Penn State baseball: Nittany Lions down Northwestern for second time

— Penn State topped Northwestern 10-6 Saturday at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park in Big Ten play.

The Nittany Lions (12-13, 2-0 Big Ten) have won seven of their last eight games and tied their season-high for runs in a game.

Penn State’s Dakota Forsyth pitched 5 2/3 innings in relief, allowing two runs on four hits to get the win. All nine Penn State hitters reached base as the Nittany Lions pounded out nine hits and drew seven walks. Penn State right fielder Zach Ell went 2-for-3 and scored two runs, while teammates J.J. White and Greg Guers each drove in two runs.

The Wildcats (4-19, 1-4) scored three runs in the top of the first inning, but Penn State answered with two runs in the bottom of the first to cut into the lead. Penn State then added three runs in the second inning to go up 5-3.

Northwestern retook the lead, moving ahead 6-5 in the top of the fifth before Penn State responded again. Alex Farkes drilled a two-run single with two outs to give the Nittany Lions the lead and later scored on Steve Snyder’s single.

Penn State and Northwestern finish the series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
