High school softball: State College beats Carlisle with walk-off hit

From CDT staff reportsApril 3, 2014

— The Lady Little Lions have already developed a knack for winning nail-biters three games into the season.

Two days removed from beating Chambersburg on a throw to home plate, State College (3-0) used a walkoff bunt single from Corey Marfitt to overtake Carlisle 4-3 on Wednesday.

“What’s encouraging about that is we are able to pull games out in the end,” State College coach Mike Harper said. “That should give us some confidence moving forward.”

After Carlisle took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth, the Lady Little Lions took their first effective swings of the game and tied it up with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

In the bottom of the seventh, Megan Robert began the final frame with a leadoff single and was moved to second on a Sharayah Simco sacrifice bunt. Lexi Mattavi grounded out to move Robert to third and Marfitt put down the game-winning bunt with two outs to plate Robert.

Karli Nolan pitched five innings and gave up three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts. Jess Henderson (1-0) relieved her and struck out three to get her first win of the season.
