Penn State Relay for Life raises $111,790 to fight cancer

From CDT staff reportsApril 7, 2014

Relay for Life of Penn State raised $111,790.13, organizers announced Sunday.

About 1,725 participants on 130 teams walked for 24 hours around Medlar Field at Lubrano Park this past weekend to remember those who survived and those who lost battles with cancer, and to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

Overall Event Chairwoman Courtney Zeuner, a Penn State graduate student, praised the participants’ perseverance amid some difficult weather.

“I just want to say how incredibly proud I am of not just the total but the event itself. Participants fought through the rough conditions and continued to walk and have a blast despite the cold and the wind,” she said in an email. “This is exactly what this organization represents. Celebrating our survivors, remembering those we've lost, and fighting back against this terrible disease no matter what challenges we face.”

The money raised “will bring us closer to the day where no one will ever have to hear the words, ‘You have cancer,’ ” she said.
